What is your show about? Why did you format it this way?
My show, Piping Hot Platters, lets me explore my monthly musical obsessions, ranging from disco and funk to electronic and garage rock. I often set themes or challenges, like focusing on one record label or specific producers, and the 2-hour format is a welcome challenge in conciseness compared to my usual 3+ hour sets.
What is your favorite record and why?
It's a close tie, but Gorillaz' self-titled debut album and Cornershop's "When I Was Born for the 7th Time”, both produced by Dan the Automator, are my favorites. These albums evoke a precise nostalgia from the late '90s and early 2000s, reminding me of my older brother blasting them while we played video games or did homework, and their mix of rock and hip hop creates an “effortless cool” that I can listen to anytime.
How did you start spinning and how long have you been doing it?
Music has always been a part of my life, with my parents' extensive record collection constantly playing new tunes in our home. Although I enjoyed making playlists and “DJ-ing” parties in high school and college, I didn't seriously consider DJing until I was 25, when friends, especially DJ Explorateur, introduced me to playing records at their gigs, greatly influencing my development as a DJ.
What draws you to radio?
When I first started at Hi-Note, I was most excited by its East Village location, thinking of it more as an inviting, relaxed space for a listening party. Recently, I've given more thought to the radio aspect, which challenges me to consider how my shows fit together, pushing me to create intentional, cohesive sets rather than just playing favorite tracks, and encouraging me to try new things.
